Revised Edition of the Complete Book of Five Elements Aromatherapy
Editor in Chief: Deng Zhenjian, Wu Xueman
The World Health Organization first released the "Global Strategy for Traditional and Alternative Medicine from 2002 to 2005" on May 26, 2002, inviting over 180 countries worldwide to incorporate this strategy into their healthcare policies. Traditional medicine is a variety of medical knowledge systems developed before modern medicine, which differs from the mainstream system of modern medicine. Its definition is: the use of plant-based, mineral based drugs, psychotherapy, and limb therapy to treat, diagnose, and prevent diseases or maintain health in medicine.
On June 18, 2018, the World Health Organization released the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases. The new version includes some new chapters, one of which deals with traditional medicine. On May 25, 2019, the 72nd World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland approved the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, which for the first time included traditional medicine originating from traditional Chinese medicine. This is a valuable achievement made by the Chinese government and traditional Chinese medicine experts after more than 10 years of continuous efforts.
Five element aromatherapy is a natural therapy that uses essential oils and hydrosol to regulate the body and mind. Many essential oils are extracted from vanilla plants and have certain physical and mental therapeutic effects. The theory of the Five Elements is the foundation of traditional Chinese culture and has been applied in many fields including agriculture, architecture, astronomy, art, and traditional Chinese medicine. The application of the theory of Yin Yang and Five Elements in traditional Chinese medicine - used to summarize the performance and efficacy of drugs. Therefore, through the differentiation of pharmacology and physical properties in traditional Chinese medicine, it is appropriate to review the dialectical relationship between the theory and application of the Five Elements in vanilla plants.
In 2003, I published the "Complete Book of Five Elements Aromatherapy" in three places on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. Due to professional and time domain constraints, the first and fourth editions of the book did not analyze and apply the basic concepts of the five elements of traditional Chinese medicine and the molecular theory of aromatic essential oil; The revised version in 2025 will refer to relevant literature from domestic and foreign scholars, re-examine the basic theory of "Five Elements Aromatherapy", and add the overall concept of "constitution theory" in traditional Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation and treatment, and the compatibility of "Jun Shi Zuo Shi" in traditional Chinese medicine formula studies.
In the revised edition, Ms. Wu Xueman, a Canadian scholar living in Canada, was invited to make scientific explanations on the definition of plant families, chemical molecules and pharmaceutical properties of essential oils, and to understand the profound meaning of five element aromatherapy from the understanding of aromatic essential oil molecular science. Ms. Wu has professional knowledge and extensive experience in medical scientific research and drug testing.
The revised edition understands the profound meaning of five elements aromatherapy from the knowledge of aromatic essential oil molecular science, and hopes that aromatherapy can be popularized healthily in China. The revised version has added the application of Five Elements Aromatherapy in palliative care and the application of Five Elements Aromatherapy in elderly care.
